Campaign Cabinet Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Sowell

Bob supports NC State’s Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign as a Cabinet volunteer for the Graduate School. Learn more about Robert’s philanthropic philosophy in the following Q&A.

How did attending NC State impact or shape your life and inspire you to get involved? 

After earning my doctorate in 1967, I spent years as a member of NC State’s faculty and administration. The last 15 years of my career at NC State, I was the associate dean and then dean of the Graduate School. In these roles, I became aware of the tremendous need for support for graduate students beyond what is provided from state, federal and grant funds, to provide educational experiences that graduate students need.

There is a tremendous need for funds to support student fellowships, travel to present research findings and other areas of professional development. Funding in these areas will help graduate students be most effective in their chosen careers.

What would you say to encourage someone to become more engaged in NC State’s culture of philanthropy? 

You will be contributing to a most worthy cause. Recipients of your gifts will be better prepared to serve in their future professions and to serve society in general.
