College of Engineering Remembers Tony Mitchell

Tony L. Mitchell, retired associate professor of electrical and computer engineering (ECE), assistant dean emeritus of the College of Engineering and an inaugural ECE Hall of Fame inductee in 2015, passed away April 1. Mitchell also was an alumnus, having earned a Ph.D. in ECE in 1987 on a US Air Force graduate fellowship. He was the first African American full-time student to earn that degree from NC State. Mitchell served on the Shelton Leadership Center Board of Advisors and was a member of the Chancellor's Circle giving society for several years.

Custom Clotting Particles Could Help Heal Chronic Wounds

New technology could transform the way doctors treat chronic wounds, which affect more than 6 million people in the U.S. each year. Chronic wounds, such as diabetic ulcers or deep-tissue burns, heal slowly or not at all and are thus prone to infection -- which can lead to severe consequences. Ashley Brown, the leader of NC State’s Advanced Wound Healing Lab, has teamed up with Fran Ligler, the Lampe Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at NC State, on the patent-pending technology to address this challenge.
