Extension Helps Partners With Tailored Solutions for Physical Activity, Healthy Eating

Four North Carolina counties with some of the state’s highest adult obesity rates are quietly gaining traction on solutions. Through NC State Extension’s Health Matters project, they have increased education and access to healthy foods and physical activity and built local partnerships to sustain progress. Supported in part by private donations, NC State Extension extends knowledge from CALS faculty to farmers, families and citizens in every North Carolina county.

Arboretum’s Annual Garden Party, Rare Plant Auction Coming Up

Proceeds from the May 5 event will benefit daily operations of the JC Raulston Arboretum. Launched over 25 years ago, the annual festivities feature food and drink, live entertainment, plus silent and live auctions of items ranging from rare and collectible plants to unique travel opportunities and garden ornaments.

Supported in part by private donations, NC State Extension aims to improve North Carolinians' lives through a host of programs and services. With more than 900 employees – nearly 600 of whom work off campus – NC State Extension provided services to 1.8 million people in 2018. The organization's economic impact on the state is estimated at $2.1 billion.

Coastal Entrepreneur – And CALS Senior

Charles Eason was one of the first students to sign up for the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics' pilot program in entrepreneurship. When he graduates this spring, Eason will be one of the program's first success stories. Private support has helped Eason create a mobile shell hatchery for oyster and clams.

Thanks to the generous support of students, faculty, staff and alumni, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences exceeded all expectations during the university's first-ever Day of Giving. The college raised more than $730,000 through more than 700 gifts.

NC State Plant Breeder Wins Prestigious Scott Medal

Tom Ranney, the JC Raulston Professor with the Department of Horticultural Science, recently won the Scott Medal, a coveted award that recognizes outstanding contributions to the science and art of gardening. Ranney was honored March 17 for his passion in creating landscape plants that enhance the environment, the economy and gardens across the country.
