Stuber Retiring as Head of Plant Breeding Consortium

Charles Stuber, who joined the NC State faculty in 1965, has made tremendous contributions to both science and education, and his work has helped lay the groundwork for the Plant Sciences Initiative. He and his wife, Marilyn, also have generously supported the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as donors, including through the establishment of a distinguished professorship.

Ty Meyer is a state FFA officer, traveling the state representing 20,000 high school and middle school FFA members. He’s also a first-year Jefferson Scholar in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State, double-majoring in political science and agricultural business management.

New Project Supports Beginner Meat Producers in NC

NC Choices has launched a new project aiming to increase the number of beginning farmers in North Carolina raising meat in pasture-based or silvopasture systems. Project funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service. Supported in part by private donations, NC Choices promotes sustainable food systems by advancing the local, niche and pasture-based meat supply chain.

Barrangou Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Rodolphe Barrangou, Todd R. Klaenhammer Distinguished Scholar in Probiotics Research and professor of food, bioprocessing and nutrition sciences, has been elected into the National Academy of Engineering, one of the world's most influential scientific societies. Barrangou is a pioneer in the discovery of the adaptive bacterial immune system known as CRISPR.

An inspiring story culminated last month as Selena Ibarra celebrated her graduation in animal science. A former factory worker in Sampson County, oldest of 11 siblings and the first in her family to attend college, the Bone Scholar earned her way through the Agricultural Institute in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Like Son, Like Father

Inspired by his son Lewis' bequest to benefit NC State's Apiculture Science Fund, College of Engineering alumnus Jim Cauble decided to create a scholarship fund through his own planned gift. His gift will also support areas of interest to his children, making philanthropy a Cauble family tradition.
