Biological and Agricultural Engineering Student Explores Biofuel at National Laboratory

Paige Seibert comes from a small town in Maryland, but her ambitions will help create a sustainable future for millions of people across the United States. The Park Scholar and rising senior in the College of Engineering is interning this summer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado, giving her the opportunity to learn how to help save our planet — Seibert’s lifelong dream.

Plants in Thin Air

Kaleb Goff, a third-year doctoral student in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, found a career by taking his interest in the outdoors to its highest level — 14,000 feet above sea level, in fact, where he studies alpine plants. Now, he’s studying the current and future impacts of climate change on alpine plant species on summits of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Great Basin in California and Nevada.

A Place for Every Child

For some children, summers can be daunting times filled with uncertainty, lack of clear schedules and even hunger. But agents and staff are working hard to make sure at-risk kids have a place at North Carolina’s 4-H summer camps. A recent crowdfunding campaign also inspired donors to help fund more than 10 scholarships.

Supporting the True Nature of Education

Wilson Cunningham has supported the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and its Department of Plant and Microbial Biology in a number of ways over the years, culminating with the creation of the H. Wilson Cunningham Student Laboratory Enrichment Endowment. On the 2023 Day of Giving, Cunningham even committed to matching up to $10,000 in gifts to the fund.

Garey Fox has been named dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences following a nationwide search. His appointment becomes effective August 1, pending Board of Trustees approval.

CALS alumna Katherine Drake Stowe has turned her interest in plant breeding into a career as the first director of the nonprofit U.S. Soybean Research Collaborative. She also serves as president of the NC State Alumni Association and volunteers with NC State’s Caldwell Fellows and SATELLITE Camp, a STEM high school outreach program led by Caldwell.
