3 Students Receive the Shawcroft Drawing Prize

The Brian Shawcroft Prize is awarded every year to an architecture student at NC State’s College of Design nominated by a faculty member for their excellent hand-drawing skills. While the competition is traditionally held on campus, students were still able to showcase their work virtually in 2020. The prize is funded thanks to the generosity of Brian Shawcroft, architect and former faculty member.

Leader, Mentor, Mother: Motley Honored for Commitment to Black Students Via Endowed Scholarship

Former Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Marva Motley worked at the College of Design for 38 years. She was a devoted advocate, cheering students on within the college and helping them navigate any challenge. When Tim Allen (MID ’02), now VP of design at Airbnb, wanted to give back to the college, naming a fund for Motley seemed natural.

A Crash Course in Impact, Resilience and Hope

The Henry W. and Lorene R. Johnston Design + Build Program at NC State's College of Design turns architecture students into a team armed with welding torches, rotary saws and hard hats. In this new vision, students are building a museum for Princeville, America’s first town chartered by formerly enslaved people — and they’re building it on wheels. While there are other Design + Build programs across the country, there’s one thing that makes this one, supported by donor Henry Johnston, stand alone: Each project, from conceptualization to completion, takes place over the span of 11 weeks.

College of Design Dean Emeritus Passes Away

The College of Design is saddened by the May 4 loss of Marvin Malecha, who served as dean from 1994 through 2015. Malecha shaped not only the campus surrounding him, but also the way students approached the concept of design. Among many other accomplishments, he established new academic programs and taught design thinking; served as an adviser on the Hunt Library project and designed the chancellor’s residence, The Point; redesigned the chancellor’s ceremonial lavalier and the university mace; and with his wife established an endowment named the Marvin and Cindy Malecha Dream Scholarship Fund, which helps students attend NC State’s Design Camp and be exposed to design at a younger age. To date, nine students have received the need-based scholarship.
