Design + Build Studio Helps Preserve History

Since its inception, the Design + Build studio at NC State's School of Architecture has tackled a number of distinct projects, each with connections to location, culture and history. In 2019, what started as a tour of Princeville — where the College of Design has a background of work with disaster recovery — led by landscape architecture professor Kofi Boone ended with a 200-plus-square-foot tribute to a town whose history was facing destruction. The studio would not have been possible without a generous gift from alumnus Bill Valentine.

A Legacy of Serving and Enhancing Communities

"If our museum is furthering the understanding between cultures and recognized for the power that it can have over people’s lives, the payoff is at the end there’s something there that is going to be standing for a long time." Phil Freelon, who graduated from the College of Design in 1975, passed away on July 9. The legacy he built through service to his alma mater and through community-enhancing architecture, such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, will indeed stand for a long time.
