Scholarship Continues to Support NC State Families

More than $1 million in Employee Dependent’s Tuition Scholarship funds have been awarded to dependents of full-time NC State employees since 2016. And more than 300 donors, most of them staff and faculty members themselves, have joined Chancellor Randy Woodson and his wife Susan by supporting the fund.

Unique Dendritic Sticky Particles Formed by Harnessing ‘Liquid Chaos’

New research from NC State shows that unique materials with distinct properties akin to those of gecko feet – the ability to stick to just about any surface – can be created by harnessing liquid-driven chaos to produce soft polymer microparticles with hierarchical branching on the micro- and nanoscale. The findings, described in the journal Nature Materials, hold the potential for advances in gels, pastes, foods, nonwovens, coatings and more. Orlin Velev, S. Frank and Doris Culberson Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, is corresponding author of the paper.

‘Soft Tactile Logic’ Tech Distributes Decision-making throughout Stretchable Material

Inspired by octopuses, researchers including Michael Dickey, NC State's Alcoa Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, have developed a structure that senses, computes and responds without centralized processing — creating a device that is not quite a robot and not quite a computer, but has characteristics of both. The new technology holds promise for use in a variety of applications, from soft robotics to prosthetic devices.
