Inside NC State’s Leading-Edge 3D Printing Hub

Deep inside Daniels Hall, activity at the Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics (CAMAL) is pushing the boundaries of 3D printing — and helping faculty and industry take their work to the next level. The multidisciplinary hub brings together students, industry partners and faculty like Ola Harrysson, Edward P. Fitts Distinguished Professor in the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and co-director of the CAMAL, to solve complex problems. What may seem like a relatively new technology has been around for more than three decades, and NC State has been a long-standing leader in the space.

New $27 Million Grant to Focus on the Future of Biomanufacturing

A new 5-year project led by NC State will sponsor an international collaborative research and training program in biomanufacturing science and technology. The effort — funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation — focuses on the next generation of biopharmaceutical manufacturing, a rapidly evolving industry sector critical to grant global access to powerful new biotherapeutics for treating a wide range of chronic and potentially lethal diseases. Ruben Carbonell, Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and principal investigator on the grant, said that the project will have significant global impact.

Incoming Female Engineering Students Create “Moon” Landings

On July 19, the day before the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, 50 incoming NC State female first-year engineers took on their own mission — launch and land an astronaut on the moon, or in this case, the Court of Carolina. They were participants in the annual ESCape Camp, a summer bridge program that helps students build a network before starting at NC State. The camp is among offerings of the College of Engineering's Women and Minority Engineering Programs, which benefit from donor and volunteer support.
