CVM Announces 2018-19 Annable Scholars

The College of Veterinary Medicine recently selected 21 students as the 2018-19 Annable Scholars. The Michele M. and Ross M. Annable Scholarship Endowment was established in 2016 with a $5 million gift from the Annables and a match from the Randall B. Terry Charitable Foundation.

Kitchen Remodel is Just What the Doctor Ordered

Thanks to a generous contribution from Nestlé Purina, the kitchens at NC State Veterinary Hospital are getting a state-of-the-art makeover that will support needs for individualized nutrition plans, offer a more integrated educational setting and provide opportunities to improve overall care for all patients.

Undergraduate Research Program Provides Early Vet School Experience

The College of Veterinary Medicine's undergraduate research program is an immersive introduction to the college and to the wide world of veterinary medicine. Launched in 2013, the Undergraduate Research Program provides a formal outlet for faculty-student research experiences. Recent participants include Greg Bacola and Goodnight Scholar Kelsie Dougherty, now in her second year at CVM.

Extraordinary Help for Bear

Hannah Adams was told there was little hope for Bear, her 6-year-old German shepherd mix, before she was referred to NC State Veterinary Hospital. With a new treatment plan and Petco Foundation's generous commitment to making cancer treatment for companion animals more accessible, Bear's prognosis has improved.

CVM’s Johnston Wins NC State, Governor’s Awards for Excellence

Dane Johnston, director of continuing education, outreach and alumni affairs at the College of Veterinary Medicine, is one of only three NC State employees this year to receive both the University Award for Excellence and the Governor’s Award for Excellence, the highest honor for a state employee. Johnston's accomplishments included creating an innovative campaign that has raised $25,000 for the college's student enhancement fund.

Fletcher’s Retirement Marks End of an Era at CVM

Oscar Fletcher, who served as the second dean of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, saw the college mature into one of the top veterinary schools in the country as a landmark gift from Randall B. Terry transformed its campus. In 2015, the Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professorship in Comparative Oncology Genetics, currently held by genomics professor Matthew Breen, was created; it honors Fletcher's extraordinary contributions as an administrator and educator.

Horse Farm Owner Honors NC State Equine Clinicians

Annie Eldridge puts her heart and soul into Settlers’ Run, her horse farm in Vass, and it means a lot when others care for her horses as much as she does. She recently honored Rich Redding, clinical professor of equine orthopedics and lameness at NC State Veterinary Hospital, with a Coat of Excellence. It was Eldridge's second such gift to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation as part of the program that honors faculty and staff members who profoundly touch the lives of an animal patient and owner.

DeFrancesco Receives Inaugural Cardiology Faculty Award

Teresa DeFrancesco, NC State College of Veterinary Medicine professor of cardiology and ICU critical care, is the recipient of the newly established Cobblestone TAGS Faculty Excellence Award in Cardiology. The award — created and funded by Deborah and Paul Resnick, longtime supporters of the college and the NC State Veterinary Hospital — recognizes faculty for excellence in both providing compassionate patient care and advancing heart disease research.

College of Veterinary Medicine Breaks Ground at Reedy Creek Equine Farm

NC State took another step forward in bold efforts to expand its equine program's educational and service potential during a May 21 ceremony. The new Reedy Creek Equine Farm, located minutes from the College of Veterinary Medicine campus, will be a modern home for equine reproductive services and a shared space also housing faculty and students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The donor-backed facility, along with the recent establishment of the Tiffany and Randy Ramsey Equine Sports Medicine Program, are part of a $37.9-million plan to provide state-of-the-art equine services.
