‘A Strong Ripple Effect’: Career Center’s Janet Rakes Leaves Legacy of Service

After 15 years with the Poole College of Management, Janet Rakes retired Aug. 1 as an assistant director at the Poole College of Management Career Center. She will now pursue other interests, one of them being to work with undergraduates as a volunteer.

Jason Bocarro Honored With 2023 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching

Jason Bocarro, the Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor for Leadership with a Global Perspective, has been named as the recipient of the 2023 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. The honor is the university system’s most prestigious teaching award, recognizing and encouraging faculty’s extraordinary teaching contributions.

Miles Engell Receives 2023 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is the most prestigious award given to professional full-time faculty from NC State’s 10 colleges and the University College. Miles Engell, a teaching professor in the College of Sciences, is known as an outstanding educator who engages and challenges students by applying real examples of animal behavior research to the topic addressed.

Two Faculty Win Holladay Medal

The Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence was named in honor of NC State’s first professor of history and its first president. This year’s recipients are Drexel Professor Jerzy Bernholc, from the Department of Physics, and Mary Haskett, a professor in the Department of Psychology who is also known as a fierce advocate for under-resourced students.

Forestry Professor Fikret Isik Named Fulbright Scholar

Fikret Isik, a professor of forestry and environmental resources and the co-director of the Tree Improvement Program at NC State, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. Beginning in February 2023, Isik will spend nearly a year conducting research on and teaching courses about quantitative genetics and its applications to plant and animal breeding at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa campus.

Chancellor Randy Woodson will deliver his annual fall address on Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. from the floor of Talley Student Union, with the entire campus invited to attend. In this year’s address, the chancellor is expected to highlight the individual and collective achievements of the NC State community — including how private support continues to help us Think and Do.

Former Park Faculty Scholar Named Fulbright Distinguished Chair in International Relations

Clifford Griffin, associate professor in the School of Public and International Affairs, was recently named a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in International Relations. As a result, the former Park Faculty Scholar will have the opportunity to conduct research at the International Relations Institute at the University of Sao Paulo this year.

Poole Staff Spotlight: Meet Brian Clark

When Brian Clark got the phone call to come back to NC State after playing five seasons in the NFL, he jumped at the chance to join the Wolfpack again. After successfully leading the fundraising efforts for the Wolfpack Club, he joined Poole College of Management in 2020 as executive director of development and external relations, where he continues to connect donors with ways to make a difference.

Tony Reevy has been named Executive Director of Development and Assistant Vice Provost for University Interdisciplinary Initiatives Development, effective July 1. Reevy will report directly to Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Warwick Arden.
