COVID-19’s Unique Impacts on Survivors of Interpersonal Violence

Survivors of interpersonal violence are experiencing unique impacts of COVID-19. The Women’s Center at NC State has seen a rise in students seeking support from trained advocates as well as significantly more applications to the Survivor Fund, which can cover related expenses, such as medical care, counseling, legal assistance, loss of employment, transportation, relocation and/or safety upgrades to housing. Gifts to the Survivor Fund help meet this increased and ongoing need.

COVID-19 Impacts First-Generation Students

Campus changes to mitigate the spread of coronavirus have impacted students everywhere, but many first-generation students face added obstacles. Joselyn Ramirez-Mendoza, a junior at NC State, is one such student adjusting to a new normal. She hopes others will take advantage of resources the university offers such as Feed the Pack food pantry, the Student Emergency Fund, the Libraries and the Counseling Center.

An Inspiring Spring Break

Every year, more than 20 teams of NC State students, accompanied by faculty and staff, fan out around the world to work with partner organizations and communities on a wide variety of projects. The university’s Alternative Service Break (ASB) program, which got its start in 1999, provides a service-based alternative to the stereotypical ways of spending spring, fall and winter breaks, with groups participating in two dozen domestic and international locations. Scholarship funds support some participants.

After #SetTheExpectation, What’s Next?

The impact of hearing activist and educator Brenda Tracy’s story last spring inspired student-athletes James Smith-Williams and Vinnie Durand to join the fight against interpersonal violence and to invite Tracy back to NC State recently for #SetTheExpectation games in football and men's soccer. Giving back is one way to continue the impact and the momentum of Tracy's return visit. Support for the NC State Survivor Fund covers medical care, counseling, legal assistance and other expenses for those who have experienced interpersonal violence.
