Provost’s Office Announces New Professional Faculty Award

The new Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching aims to promote the importance of teaching and to encourage, identify, recognize, reward and support excellent teaching within the university. This award will be the most prestigious campus recognition for teaching given to professional faculty from among NC State’s 10 colleges and the University College.

Castelloe Family Foundation Establishes Endowed Fund to Support NC State Counseling Center

Blair Castelloe Vanhook ’92, a member of the Castelloe Family Foundation, is working to help address the issue of mental health on college campuses by establishing the Castelloe-Vanhook Family Counseling Center Endowment at NC State. The fund provides support to the NC State Counseling Center for mental health initiatives and training, such as those focused on suicide prevention, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, stress management and others.

James Buzzard Leaves Lasting Impact at NC State

A distinguished alumnus and long-time supporter of NC State, James “Jim” Buzzard passed away on April 9, 2021, at the age of 66. Buzzard was a 1976 graduate of pulp and paper science and technology, served on the NC State Natural Resources Foundation Board from 2010-2019 — and was Chair of the Board from 2015-2017 — and served on the NC State Campaign Cabinet, among many other services to the university.

Libraries Gifted With New Endowments on Day of Giving

Donors to the NC State Libraries were particularly generous and thoughtful on March 24. The Libraries exceeded its previous two years of Day of Giving efforts combined, bringing in $1,491,566 from 217 gifts. Two new scholarship endowments were created, two new collections endowments were established and sizable increases were made to the Student Resource Fund, among many other successes.

University Programs Provide More Than $1M to Combat Student Evictions, Homelessness

As the effects of COVID-19 continue to challenge the NC State community, Student Ombuds Services has provided $1,228,533 as small grants for students applying for financial assistance through the Student Emergency Fund, as well as making students aware of other opportunities and financial resources such as the Extraordinary Opportunity Scholarship Initiative, Feed the Pack food pantry and more.

Brown Family Donates $1M to Creative Writing Program

Tony McLean Brown ’83 and his family have made a transformative $1 million gift to support the MFA in Creative Writing program at NC State. The gift marks the largest for a humanities department at the university and one of the largest funded endowments in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Brown’s wife, Kathy Askew Brown ’83, and two of their children, Miles and Julia, also are NC State alumni.

Miller Steps Back From Delta and Mckimmon Roles to Focus on Entrepreneurship

Thomas “Tom” Kenan Miller III, senior vice provost for academic outreach and entrepreneurship, has led Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) since its inception in 2000. Miller was named the founding vice provost in January 2001 following a national search. This summer, he will step back from his leadership role there and his oversight of the McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education to focus on his ongoing role leading NC State Entrepreneurship and working closely with the Wolfpack Investor Network in the next phase of his career.

Golden LEAF Awards Ag Institute Nearly $1M

The Golden LEAF Foundation has awarded nearly $1 million to NC State’s Agricultural Institute, a two-year program that prepares students for careers in agriculture. The funds, which will be used over five years, will support the animal agriculture industry by expanding the pipeline of available talent for jobs.
