Park Enrichment Grants Awarded

Several Park Scholars will enjoy extraordinary experience in the coming months thanks to Park Enrichment Grants awarded in June. The grants support students in the pursuit of professional and personal enrichment experiences in the United States and abroad, and they are designed to develop scholarship, service, leadership and character.

Hornes: Past, Present and Future

Father and son Chuck and Wesley Horne continued a family legacy begun in 1935 by studying at NC State's Wilson College of Textiles. They help ensure the college's future through hiring NC State graduates at their company, Hornwood, and through philanthropy. The Kenneth W. Horne Sr. Scholarship and Textile Pioneer Scholars Program, which offers need-based scholarships, help create new opportunities for students.

Extraordinary Care, Extraordinary Appreciation

The extraordinary emergency care their horse Max received, as well as the cutting-edge work of the Intestinal Regenerative Medicine laboratory of assistant professor Liara Gonzales, inspired Mike and Mary Jo Matthies to make a bequest supporting equine research and equine medicine scholarships at NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Music and Access: The Class of 2019 Legacy

Park Scholars give back – this mindset is at the core of the program's mission and culture. The Class of 2019 partnered with the Town of Clayton and the Clayton Community Recreational Foundation to work on Harmony Playground, an inclusive park intended to foster fun and friendship among children of all abilities.

Former Park Scholar Jessica Ritter is a Force for Change

When Jessica Ritter decided to forego veterinary school for a year after graduating from NC State in 2010, she did not know how much of an impact that decision would have on her life, or in the world. Now, the former Park Scholar serves as director of water resources and coastal policy at the National Wildlife Federation, where she guides policy and advocacy work on issues ranging from clean water to national infrastructure investments and from disaster response to coastal community resilience.

Student Spotlight: Kaitlin Perkins

Kaitlin Perkins packed her time at NC State with extraordinary experiences. A Caldwell Fellow and Pack Promise scholar, the May graduate in biological and agricultural engineering landed sought-after internships with Johnson and Johnson Vision Care and Campbell’s Soup Company, introduced former First Lady Michelle Obama to the campus community at a 2016 event, and was a leader with the National Society of Black Engineers and Alternative Spring Break programs.

From chromosomes deep in the heart of a cell to exoplanets in the farthest reaches of space, Goldwater Scholar Ana Sofia Uzsoy is doing research to help us understand the universe at every scale. The Park Scholar is already part of the team in the molecular biophysics lab of assistant professor Mary Elting.

Nikhil Milind, a 2019 Goldwater Scholar and Park Scholar, is melding computer science and biology to explore links between genetics and disease. Outside the lab, the classically trained violinist and pianist enjoys playing the guitar and ukulele.

Ragland Foundation to Provide Scholarships to Teachers Seeking Advanced Degrees in K-12 Reading

A $25,000 gift from the W. Trent Ragland Jr. Foundation will allow the College of Education to support a fifth cohort of teachers seeking a master’s degree in new literacies and global learning with a specialization in K-12 reading. The foundation established the Teaching and Leading Literacy Scholarship Program in 2016 and has provided scholarships of $2,000 to nearly 60 teachers who are part of the NLGL’s literacy cohort.
