NC State Moves up in 2022-23 Military Friendly Rankings

NC State has earned a top 10 spot in Military Friendly’s national Military Friendly Schools rankings for 2022-23, rising from ninth place the previous year to sixth place. Jeffrey Wright Military and Veteran Services is a key part of a universitywide effort to recruit and support military-affiliated students.

Nick Drake is director of NC State’s Jeffrey Wright Military and Veteran Services, as well as a veteran himself. With help from the university’s Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign, he leads the initiative supporting others in making the transition from the military to college graduation and beyond.

Veterans on the Farm

The number of military veterans taking part in the North Carolina Farm School, an annual NC State Extension program that helps new and aspiring growers learn more about agriculture, is on the rise. The program, which has been supported by individual donors and groups like the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, is aimed at increasing sustainable and economically viable farms in the state.

NC State Hosts Conference for Military-Affiliated Students and Veterans

As a regional site for the Student Transition Resource Initiative for Veteran's Education (STRIVE) conference, NC State recently served 378 participants, a total nearly equaling last year’s attendance for all four regions. The university continues to strengthen its community of military-affiliated and veteran students through the Military and Veterans Services Center. Private support, like that from NC State University Foundation Board member Jeff Wright, is helping the center become self-sustaining.

Smithfield Foods Supports Soldier to Agriculture Program

The Smithfield Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Smithfield Foods Inc., has given $200,000 to help support NC State's Soldier to Agriculture Program, a partnership between the Agricultural Institute and the career center at Fort Bragg.

NC State alumnus Jeffrey Wright, a former officer in the U.S. Navy, has established an endowment to support the growing efforts of Military and Veteran Services, as well as a $100,000 challenge grant to encourage other gifts.
